NYC - 5

September 23rd – September 29th 2013

5 work days for J.
It makes our explorations kind of limited.
School, shopping, television, relaxing, reading.
One day off: errands and some practical stuff.
Loop around our neighborhood. Morningside park. Turtle. Cloudy and sad and gray. State park on maybe former dock or something like that – many sports facilities. Decent views.

Subway and walk to the Battery park area (bottom of Manhattan).
Saturday. Breezy and sunny.
Stock Exchange on Wall Street – all fenced in, strange.
Too many tourists and overcrowded sidewalk.
Many streets blocked and empty, strange again.
The ferry to Governor’s Island. Free. The island open only on weekends.
About ten minutes before departure. Many people.
Half a mile ride. More less.
Nice views. Pretty pleasant ride.
Statue of Liberty. Helicopters. Boats.
The island. Used to be a military base.
Next year will reopen as the city park. Now under construction (half of the island).
Crowd leaving the ferry.

For Jay – nice architecture, never saw a battle. Mostly closed.
Many empty buildings. Roads.
There are no people living on the island.
Sunny. Extremely pleasant day – sun and breeze.
Tour of Castle Williams. Newer fort built to secure the city.
Incredible views from the roof. Military island.
Coast guard island. The Castle was fort. Army prison.
Storage building. Now it is National Monument.
As of writing: close due to the government shutdown.
Really, this is how democracy works?
Walk across the island to the Brooklyn ferry.
So many empty houses and buildings. There used to be up to 4000 people living.
Quick ride to Brooklyn. Same great views.

Walk along the river. Manhattan views.
Dumbo Arts Festival in Brooklyn neighborhood of Dumbo.
Really crowded. Brooklyn Bridge. Manhattan Bridge.
Don't give up. People in costumes shouting this sentence.
Quite interesting and amusing area and things.
Walk around for a while.
Subway to another part of Brooklyn.
Czech-Slovak restaurant called Milan (owner's name).
Early dinner – excellent.
D subway home. Tired and worn out.
End of the day. Really nice one.
